The line graph illustrates US energy consumption by six different fuel types from 1980, with forecasts to 2030, based on a 2008 report. Overall, petrol and oil were the most used energy sources throughout the period, and all fuels except hydropower were projected to see rising consumption by 2030. Fossil fuels remained far more dominant than renewable and nuclear energy. In 1980, US consumption of petrol and oil stood at 35 quadrillion units, despite an initial dip to around 32 units in 1985, this figure grew steadily, and is expected to reach 50 quadrillion units by 2030. Coal and natural gas started at 16 and 20 quadrillion units respectively; while natural gas use levelled off at 25 units from 2015 onwards, coal consumption is predicted to climb to 33 units by 2030. By contrast, non-fossil fuels were used in much lower quantities. Nuclear, solar/wind energy saw gradual increases, rising from under 5 quadrillion units to roughly 8 and 6 units respectively by 2030. Hydropower was the only energy source expected to remain stable at around 3 quadrillion units over the 50-year period.
