The two pie charts compare the proportion of water consumed across five different sectors (food industry, service industry, household use, manufacturing and building industry) in Sydney, Australia, in 1997 and 2007.

Overall, the food industry accounted for the largest share of water use in both years, despite a slight decline in its figure. By contrast, the service industry and household use saw growth in their water consumption proportions, while the building industry remained the smallest water user over the period.

In detail, nearly half of total water was used by the food industry in 1997, at 48%, though this dropped to 41% a decade later. The service industry experienced the most noticeable rise: its percentage more than doubled from 13% in 1997 to 25% in 2007, making it the second biggest water consumer in the latter year. A similar upward trend could be seen in household use, which grew marginally from 19% to 21%.

On the other hand, water use in the manufacturing sector fell from 15% to 11%, and the building industry’s water consumption declined even further, from 5% to merely 2%, remaining the least water-reliant sector in Sydney in both years.
