Overall, while gas was the only source of carbon emissions whose emission levels increased over the 20-year period, both coal and oil saw declines in their emission amounts. In addition, coal was the most polluting fossil fuel at the start of the period, but gas became the largest emission source by 2010. In detail, coal released 310 million tons of carbon in 1990, the highest figure in that year, followed by oil at 270 million tons and gas at around 220 million tons. Over the following two decades, however, coal emissions fell steadily to just 190 million tons, making it the least significant source of the three. Similarly, emissions from oil dropped gradually to 210 million tons in 2010, despite a slight fall to 240 million tons in 1995. By contrast, the amount of carbon emitted by gas rose consistently over the period, reaching a peak of approximately 320 million tons in 2010, which exceeded the emission levels of the other two fuels.
