The table illustrates the proportions of female students, students whose first language is not English, and students born outside Australia across six university departments in 2011. Overall, Humanities and Education had the highest share of female students, while IT and Engineering were male-dominated. Additionally, STEM departments (Science, Physics, IT, Engineering) had significantly higher percentages of non-native English speakers and international students (born overseas) compared to humanities and education. In detail, females made up 72% of Humanities students and 68% of Education students, the two highest figures, whereas Engineering and IT had the smallest female proportions at only 15% and 17% respectively. By contrast, these two technical fields had the highest shares of students with English as a second language: 49% in IT and 42% in Engineering, far above the 12% and 16% recorded in Humanities and Education. Turning to international students, Physics and IT shared the top figure of 56% of students born outside Australia, followed by Engineering (48%) and Science (31%). Humanities had the lowest proportion of overseas-born students at just 20%, marginally lower than Education’s 23%.
